Gemstones which are often called gems are pieces of metal which are in cut and sparkled form used in making jewelry and other embellishments. They always come in different colors which are stunning and captivating. However, they also lose their values as their colors fade away. So for your loose gemstones to preserve their radiance and magnificence here are some tips on how you can take care of your precious stones:

  • Do not put them together in one place.

Loose gems have different features and it is not a good idea to just put them together in the same place. Brittle gems can be scratched and become rough when they get in contact with harder gems so it is recommended to store your gems separately. You can place them in different boxes in which cotton is most preferred, or in velvet lined boxes. Always clean your gems by lightly damping soft cloth and drying them before placing them in the box. Keeping them away from chemicals, sprays, and perfumes is also a good practice. Soap can also be used to eliminate dirt and other particles but don’t rub them too much for a long period of time.

  • Avoid exposing them in high temperature.

High temperature may cause loose gems to change their physical properties like their color so it is necessary to store your jewelry boxes where the temperature is constant. Extended exposure to sunlight may cause them to lose their colors and also, avoid exposing them in fire. You should remove your jewelry before going into the kitchen and doing laborious actions because they may be scratched and blemishes may occur or even crack when they get in contact with abrasive materials. And also, don’t wear your jewelries when swimming or taking a shower.

  • Use ultrasonic cleaners if necessary.

Cleaning your loose gems with soft toothbrushes is acceptable. Detergents can also be used to clean some stones which include diamond. However, pearl, garnet, ruby, amethyst, and aquamarine show negative behaviour when come in contact with a household cleaner. There are ultrasonic cleaners which can be utilized to clean a lot of gems except opal and emerald. Because most stones are durable, soaking them in a mild soapy solution can be the easiest way to clean them. But for brittle ones, they should only be cleaned by using a soft wet cloth.
