Black Gemstones

It´s official!

Black is a color of authoritative challenge. It holds the entire color spectrum within itself, and yet attracts energy so no light is visible. It symbolizes darkness and death, yet it is the color dress in by nuns and priests. Black is the sign of luxury and sophistication, or poverty and sadness. Although there are varieties of gemstones that are deep dark gray, like smoky quartz, or dark silver, like hematite, there are only four — obsidian, black tourmaline, jet and onyx — that all the way through the ages have been worn to tap the magical power of the color black.

Strictly speaking black is not a color. It is the absence of all color. When people speak of opposites, it is usually in terms of black and white. Black, and its opposite white, symbolizes polarities. Black attracts all portion of light. While white reveals, black conceals. It has come to indicate secret, fearful or bad experience. It is related to the unknown or the invisible.

In times of fright and doubt black hold the energy of the frightening unknown. In a positive state, black is seen as a peaceful blankness into which anything may appear and disappear once again. It is also mysterious, providing a sense of potential and possibility.

Put some black in your life when you want:

  • to become inconspicuous
  • to open the door to mystery
  • to prepare for the unknown
  • a restful emptiness

Black gemstones represent self control and resilience. Black stones have protective energies in the sense that black is the absence of light, and as a result, can be used to create invisibility.

Here is some list of black gemstones:

Black Onyx

Black onyx is a shiny, solid stone with a waxy surface. It is a form of chalcedony and occurs naturally in a variety of colors.

Obsidian

Obsidian, sometimes called Apache tears, is a naturally occurring black glass. It is created by volcanic lava that cooled quickly, preventing minerals from properly forming.

Jet

Jet is a black glasslike stone created by fossilized wood millions of years old. It is from this stone that the term “jet black” was coined.

Black Tourmaline

Black tourmaline, or schorl, has an opaque crystalline structure and is usually considered too fragile and brittle to make into jewelry.
